A Different Way to Eat Pizza

Meal:     Supper
Date:     October 2, 2011

Home made pizza or calzones are a staple in our house - made in the oven or on the grill. I'm always looking for a new way to make a 'pizza' and I've found a delicious new way! Of course with a few 'modifications' and a few ideas to try next time!

I followed TidyMom's basic recipe this time, although, I left out a few ingredients!

Ingredients
  • 2 cans refrigerated pizza crust
  • garlic salt (omitted)
  • Italian Seasoning (omitted)
  • 1 cup sliced and chopped pepperoni
  • 1 cup shredded cheese
  • Pizza Sauce for dipping
First, preheat your oven to 350º (the original recipe said 425º, but due to comments regarding the bottom of the rolls being burnt, I tried a lower temperature with much success!)

Then, prepare your toppings - including the shredded cheese! (I used a packaged shredded pizza cheese, because that's what I had on hand - but use your favorite cheese!)

Because pepperoni isn't the favorite pizza topping in our house, I fried Italian sausage, chopped pepperoni, and onions - all to use as the toppings. Go crazy, use your favorite toppings - get creative!

I then rolled out two refrigerated cans of Pizza Crust - using flour to get roll them thin enough and prevent sticking to my rolling pin & counter. Next time, I will make my own crust (just a personal preference and I can use a whole wheat crust then!)

Next, spread all your toppings over the rolled pizza crust!

Now, slowly roll the dough and toppings together! Once rolled, slice one inch slices off the roll.

Gently lay rolled slices on a lightly greased baking sheet.

Bake in oven for 10 to 12 minutes. While pizza rolls are baking, heat pizza sauce on stove (I used a basic homemade Italian sauce I had previously made and froze during tomato season!)
Your finished product should look like this - enjoy!

Overall, it is a delicious new way to enjoy pizza and it will definitely be made again in our house! (Even my nine-month old daughter loved her slice!) After a successful experience - I definitely will expand the next time with a homemade whole wheat pizza crust and a variety of vegetables!
